Issues and Background:

Addressing international labor and migration is an important global issue because it is the link to discrimination against workers and is the source of "brain drain". Discrimination against migrant workers has always existed, but recently the level of this issue has increased."ILO (international Labor Organization) studies showed that more than one in every three qualified immigrant applicants were unfairly excluded in job selection procedures." (Facts on Labor Migration)This discrimination is not making it simple for migrant workers to get jobs. Most migrant workers leave their home countries in search of jobs to support their families and themselves, but the difficulty to get jobs is countering their main intentions and contributing to "brain drain". Brain drain is where developing countries lose skilled and crucial workers. The effects of brain drain can be evened out if the workers find jobs and send money back to the host country, but right now, the issue of brain drain is still at large."Developing countries lose 10 to 30 percent of skilled workers and professionals through "Brain Drain." (Facts on Labor Migration).These issues on International Labor and Migration are quite important. The world has already experienced discrimination once with African Americans, and that resulted in various up springs. Labor Migration can help develop peace between countries, if it's controlled properly.

The Main Problem
International labor and migration has many issues. It can help eliminate poverty but can also lead to the destruction or survival of developing countries. International labor and migration’s main problems are “brain drain”, which is where the smart and useful people leave the country to work somewhere else, slavery, discrimination and illegal immigrations. Believe it or not but slavery is still alive in the world. It is in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the west. These slaves are spread or transported around the world through illegal immigration, which is also becoming a larger issue. Illegal immigration is the root of many problems such as overpopulation and slavery. Large scale discrimination against people is believed to be gone, like slavery, but it is real. In fact “ILO studies showed that more than one in every three qualified immigrant applicants were unfairly excluded in job selection procedures.” (Facts on Labour Migration)

How is this issue affecting the world?
During the past couple of years, international labor and migration have increased, whether it is legal immigration or illegal. This increase in immigrant workers has started to either harm or benefit developing countries through brain drain or remittances and has also started to bring on complaints from local people about immigrants stealing their jobs. But the most visible effect that international labor has brought upon the world is the decrease in world poverty.

The Organizations and What They are Doing About The Issue

The ILO, or the International Labor Organization, has done its best to ensure that there is decent work for immigrant workers. They have come up with a Decent Work Agenda which focuses on creating jobs, guaranteeing rights at work, providing basic social protection, and promoting dialogue and conflict resolution. The ILO also has been pressing companies to use their Plan of Action-
· Development of a non-binding multilateral framework for a rights-based approach to labour migration, taking account of labour market needs and sovereignty of States;
· Wider application of international labour standards and other relevant instruments;
· Support for implementation of the ILO Global Employment Agenda at the national level;
· Upholding social protection for migrant workers;
· Providing capacity-building, awareness-raising and technical assistance worldwide;
· Strengthening social dialogue;
· Improving the information and knowledge base on global trends in labour migration;
· Participation in relevant international initiatives on migration.
(The Role of the ILO)

The child rights organization, UNICEF has been working hard to help children all over the world. In Africa, UNICEF has tried it’s best to locate child labor and eliminate it, many of the children there do not have vaccines as they are turned into slaves before they can receive proper medical treatment. UNICEF has been helping children in Cote D’Ivoire by sending medical vaccinations, medical drugs, rations, gas burners and clean water. They have also been training volunteers so they can reopen some of the abandoned medical centers that are in Cote D’Ivoire. Besides the medical fields, UNICEF has been publishing articles on happening in the Ivory Coast to raise awareness and gain volunteers.
